China seeks to join WTO talks challenging US forced-labor tariffs

The filing says the US duties, which can reach 37.5 percent, would shift competition for Chinese exports to the United States.

China has asked to join World Trade Organization consultations that Brazil opened against US forced-labor tariffs, with the duties reaching up to 37.5 percent, the South China Morning Post reports. China filed its request in Geneva on Monday and told the trade body it has a substantial commercial interest in the case.

In the submission, China said Washington could apply comparable measures to Chinese goods and that such steps would affect all Chinese exports to the US, subject to specific exemptions. Beijing argued that the additional duties change the competitive conditions for Chinese products sold in the American market.

China also noted the grounds for its concern focused on how its own exports are treated, rather than on the treatment of Brazilian goods. The WTO document had not yet appeared in the organization’s public records as of Monday.

The South China Morning Post adds that China has challenged Section 301 of the US Trade Act of 1974 at the WTO since 2018, arguing the law allows Washington to determine violations and impose penalties without multilateral authorization.
