Deadly 7.4 earthquake strikes western Colombia, officials report fatalities

Officials said the quake struck at 7:34am local time, with the epicenter in San Jose Del Palmar, and reports include people trapped and widespread building damage.

A fatal 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit western Colombia on Monday morning, leaving residents trapped under rubble and causing severe damage to buildings and infrastructure, according to SCMP Economy. Colombian officials reported at least 18 deaths in Pereira, about 300 km from Bogota, while another two people were killed in Manizales, also roughly 300 km from the capital, SCMP Economy reported, citing statements by the respective mayors.

The quake struck at 7:34am local time, with the epicenter in San Jose Del Palmar, a community of about 4,800 people in the Chocó region around 400 km west of Bogota, the US Geological Survey and Colombia’s counterpart reported, SCMP Economy said.

SCMP Economy also noted that authorities in western Colombia said some people are trapped and that there has been serious damage to buildings.
