Drought declared across 71.3% of England as water stress deepens

The UK said all regions are under pressure on water resources, with most of England in a rapid “flash drought” condition tied to low rainfall and high temperatures.

The UK government said on Monday that 71.3% of England is now in drought, after the country saw its driest July on record and continued dry conditions, including a fifth heatwave and limited rain expected in the week ahead, according to SCMP Economy.

The Environment Department said conditions have worsened since early August, with parts of the central Midlands and northeast joining other areas facing prolonged dry weather. It also warned that pressure on water resources is affecting every region of the UK, and that no part of the country is at a “normal” status.

Defra said most of England is experiencing a “flash drought”, which develops quickly when rainfall is very low and temperatures are high. The government also noted this is the third drought Britain has faced in five years.

Earlier reporting cited in the same account said more than 50% of England was declared to be in drought at the end of July, as river levels fell and farmers warned about low crop yields and potential food shortages.
