Indonesia’s Mount Bromo wildfire is extinguished but new hotspots appear

Authorities said the initial fire that burned 550 hectares has been put out, but new hotspots around the caldera cover about 20 hectares, with the park closed until further notice.

A wildfire in Indonesia’s Mount Bromo National Park in East Java that burned 550 hectares has been extinguished, an official said Monday, but authorities identified new hotspots near the volcano’s caldera.

Gatot Soebroto, head of the local disaster mitigation agency, said teams found fires in areas around the caldera covering about 20 hectares, and he warned the fire near the caldera is likely to spread further on Monday.

Reuters reported more than 120 personnel, three water-bombing helicopters, drones and fire trucks have been deployed to fight the fires around the caldera. The cause remains under investigation, but officials suspect it was triggered by carelessness after a flame was found along a visitor route.

The Mount Bromo national park has been closed since Saturday evening because of the fires, and the shutdown will remain in place until further notice, according to the park chief. There have been no casualties reported.
