Liverpool close to £1.35bn deal selling 30% stake to Bezos-led group
The consortium is expected to pay about £1.35bn for the 30% holding, though completion may take up to a month.
Fenway Sports Group, which has owned Liverpool since 2010, is close to completing the sale of a 30% stake in the club to a consortium led by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, according to the Guardian Business. The deal is described as effectively agreed after months of talks between the investors and FSG.
The group is led by Amit Bhatia, a former shareholder and director at Queens Park Rangers and the son-in-law of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal. Another member is Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, who will pay in the region of £1.35bn.
The report says the transaction could take up to a month to complete and that Bezos will receive equity as part of the deal, with Deloitte advising. The news outlet also notes Bezos will make his first football investment, after previously looking into bids for NFL franchises.
According to the Guardian Business, Liverpool ownership plans come as the club has seen leadership and squad changes at Anfield, including Andoni Iraola replacing Arne Slot as head coach, Mohamed Salah leaving on a free transfer to join Trabzonspor, and Michael Edwards departing as FSG chief executive officer. FSG last sold a 3% stake in Liverpool to the US private equity firm Dynasty Equity in 2023.
