NZ dollar slips near 0.5900 as dollar firms and oil jumps

NZD/USD hovered around 0.5881, with the USD supported by the Strait of Hormuz closure and US-Iran tensions while WTI rose toward $81.5.

FXStreet reports the New Zealand dollar eased against the US dollar on Monday, trading near 0.5900 after failing to hold recent gains toward multi-day highs. The Kiwi drifted back into the high-0.5800s as the US dollar stayed firm across the board.

The outlet links the broader USD strength to a persistent risk premium tied to the US-Iran standoff. With President Donald Trump and Tehran still “trading demands rather than closing a deal,” the Strait of Hormuz remains shut, and the safe-haven bid has pushed the US Dollar Index close to the 100 threshold.

FXStreet also points to energy prices as part of the backdrop, noting West Texas Intermediate oil has surged close to $81.50 per barrel. For NZD/USD, short-term technicals show the pair around 0.5881 on the 4-hour chart, holding above the 100-period simple moving average near 0.5840.

In FXStreet’s view, near-term resistance is seen at 0.5884, then 0.5891 and 0.5901, while support sits around 0.5879 ahead of the 100-period SMA cluster. A break below that level would weaken the current constructive tone and open the door to a deeper pullback.
