Taylor Farms expands recall of jalapeño products over salmonella risk
The recall centers on prepared items sold through retailers and comes after a jalapeño-linked Salmonella outbreak sickened 345 people across 27 states.
Taylor Farms said it is recalling more than a dozen prepared food items containing jalapeños, including salsas and guacamole, after concerns about potential Salmonella contamination, Insurance Journal reported.
The California-based supplier said the affected products were linked to a recall by Coast Citrus Distributors and that it is no longer sourcing jalapeño peppers from a farmer in Sinaloa, Mexico, that supplied Coast Citrus while it seeks alternative suppliers. Taylor Farms also said it is unaware of any reported illnesses connected to the voluntarily recalled items.
The recall follows a U.S. health authorities investigation into a Salmonella outbreak tied to jalapeño peppers imported from Mexico. The outbreak has sickened 345 people across 27 states and resulted in 36 hospitalizations, according to the report.
Restaurant chains including Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA received the peppers and have stopped using them, while Coast Citrus recalled remaining product and notified customers. Insurance Journal noted Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, and that some groups face more severe illness risk, including young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.
