Malaysia looks to expand economic ties with South Korea in high-value sectors
Malaysia’s investment agency says South Korean firms have put US$11.7 billion into more than 400 projects in the country as of 2025, supporting nearly 50,000 jobs.
Malaysia is aiming to take its economic partnership with South Korea beyond traditional manufacturing and trade by positioning the country as a long-term strategic partner for higher-value industries, including semiconductors and AI, electric vehicles, renewable energy, and the global halal economy, according to an interview carried by The Korea Times.
The Malaysian Investment Development Authority said the relationship has shifted into a new phase, with growing opportunities for South Korean companies to use Malaysia as an investment destination and as a gateway to the wider ASEAN market.
MIDA said South Korean companies have implemented investments totaling US$11.7 billion across more than 400 projects in Malaysia as of 2025, creating nearly 50,000 jobs. Those investments span chemicals, transport equipment, electrical and electronic products, petroleum products, and basic metals.
Redzuan Abd Rahman and Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation trade commissioner Mohamad Termizi HJ Piee pointed to complementary national strategies, with South Korea advancing leadership in semiconductors, AI, advanced manufacturing, mobility, batteries, and green technologies, while Malaysia pursues its New Industrial Master Plan 2030, National Semiconductor Strategy, and National Energy Transition Roadmap, as a basis for deeper collaboration in investment, technology, and industrial partnerships.
