US judge dismisses fraud and bribery case against Gautam Adani
The Justice Department said on May 18 it would stop pursuing the case, and the judge approved prosecutors’ request to drop the charges.
A US judge dismissed criminal fraud and bribery charges against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani after the US Justice Department decided to abandon the prosecution, according to Reuters via SCMP Economy.
Brooklyn-based US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis granted prosecutors’ rare bid to toss the case after asking about their reasons, including whether Adani was promised anything in exchange for dropping the matter. Adani Group has denied wrongdoing, and Adani himself did not appear in US court to respond to the charges.
Adani was charged in 2024 after prosecutors alleged he agreed to bribe Indian government officials to help an Adani Group subsidiary win approval to develop a solar energy plant, and that he then misled US investors by providing reassurance about the company’s anti-corruption practices.
The Justice Department announced on May 18 it would no longer pursue the case. Legal experts said judges have limited discretion to force prosecutors to continue cases they no longer want, but charges still require a judge’s approval to be formally dismissed.
