US Senate delays CLARITY vote, pushing crypto market structure fight to September
The CLARITY vote is now expected in mid-September and would need 60 senators to pass, with advocates warning the timing leaves little runway before the 2026 midterms.
Crypto advocates and industry executives criticized a procedural delay in the US Senate that pushes consideration of the Digital Asset Market Clarity, or CLARITY, Act to September, after lawmakers break for a month-long recess. Cointelegraph reports that the effort had been scheduled for earlier action but is now expected when the Senate reconvenes in mid-September.
According to Cointelegraph, Majority Leader John Thune filed cloture to bring the CLARITY Act to the Senate floor, ending speculation that lawmakers would take up the bill more than a year after it passed the House of Representatives. The article says the vote is now expected to occur with a 60-vote threshold required to pass.
Cointelegraph adds that the revised timeline has frustrated advocates because it leaves about 50 days before the 2026 midterm elections, which they say could reduce the odds of passage. The outlet also notes that executives including Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong and the exchange’s chief policy officer Faryar Shirzad described the delay as disappointing but said September would be the time to finish the work.
Bitmine Chair Tom Lee said in the company’s weekly report that market attention appears more focused on recent softer inflation and jobs data than on what CLARITY passage would mean. Cointelegraph also reports that, despite mentions of bipartisan talks, the Senate did not announce solutions in response to Democratic calls for stricter ethics provisions, including rules tied to US President Donald Trump’s crypto investments.
