US stock index futures edge lower as CPI and earnings draw near

Dow futures were down 0.1% while S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 futures rose slightly, as investors look to Wednesday’s CPI for clues on inflation and Fed policy.

US stock index futures were muted at the start of a busy week for earnings and inflation data, with the major indexes trading near all-time highs, according to Yahoo Finance.

Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged lower by 0.1%, while S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 futures gained slightly after a winning week. Investors also appeared in wait-and-see mode as Iran teased that a deal to open the Strait of Hormuz is “very close,” with Brent crude futures trading around $84 per barrel.

Oil held a slight gain as markets weighed will-they, won’t-they speculation around a potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Investors are also awaiting the Consumer Price Index (CPI) reading on Wednesday, which could shift the inflation outlook.

Federal Reserve officials remain divided on whether to raise interest rates as they monitor the oil shock from the Middle East conflict and its potential impact on inflation. Meanwhile, Yahoo Finance noted that more than 80% of S&P 500 companies have already reported, but several AI infrastructure names, including CoreWeave, Nebius, Cerebras Systems, and Super Micro Computer, are expected to help round out the earnings picture.
