Vitalik Buterin updates Ethereum roadmap with earlier quantum safety

Buterin said Ethereum’s current strawmap targets finality in seconds and scale to 10,000 TPS on L1, with 10 million TPS expected from layer 2 networks.

Vitalik Buterin overlaid Ethereum’s 2023 roadmap diagram onto the Ethereum Foundation’s current “strawmap,” describing how the priorities for the base chain have shifted over the past three years, according to The Defiant.

In the comparison, Buterin said privacy, defenses against quantum computers, and an execution engine that goes beyond the Ethereum Virtual Machine were not on the 2023 diagram in any form. He also said quantum safety was moved up in priority, while two projects that anchored the 2023 plan were replaced outright.

Buterin tied the direction of the upgrade work to dependencies that he described as carrying far more weight than in 2023, including STARK proofs and the use of artificial intelligence to mathematically verify protocol code, The Defiant reported.

The strawmap, maintained by the Foundation’s Architecture team of Justin Drake, Thomas Thiery, Toni Wahrstätter and Buterin, lays out seven network upgrades by 2029 at about one every six months. It sets long-range targets that include finality in seconds, 10,000 transactions per second on Ethereum using zero-knowledge proofs of the EVM (zkEVMs), 10 million transactions per second for layer 2 networks, cryptography that holds for centuries against quantum computers, and shielded transfers that hide payment details, the outlet said.
