Vitalik Buterin updates Ethereum roadmap with quantum security and privacy focus
Buterin says the updated “Strawmap” adds new priorities including post-quantum scaling, leaner protocol specs, and more AI-assisted, STARK-based formal verification.
Vitalik Buterin says Ethereum has elevated its focus on quantum security and privacy since its 2023 roadmap, pointing to an updated long-term technical outline he calls the “Strawmap.” Decrypt reports that in a Monday post on X, Buterin said he revised the roadmap to compare its original goals with Ethereum’s current priorities and highlighted that some items are new versus 2023.
Among the changes, Buterin described stronger privacy and scaling aimed at a post-quantum world, alongside efforts to “lean-ification of the spec,” or simplifying Ethereum’s technical specifications. He also said Ethereum’s scaling approach is shifting toward specialized mechanisms with restrictive properties that are more scaling-friendly, while still supporting the heaviest loads from today’s use cases and tomorrow’s privacy needs, including token transfers and swaps as well as privacy protocols.
Buterin also said advances in AI are making it more practical to apply verification techniques more extensively to Ethereum. Decrypt notes he cited Ethereum’s increasing use of STARKs, plus AI-assisted formal verification, to help ensure the protocol works as intended.
The post comes as Ethereum accelerates preparations for “Q-Day” and the potential threat posed by quantum computers. Decrypt adds that Ethereum has taken steps such as a call to adopt quantum-resistant cryptography, the formation of a dedicated post-quantum team, and a phased plan to replace four potentially vulnerable cryptographic components.
