Vitalik Buterin says AI could break crypto encryption within two years
Buterin urged the industry to prepare for both AI-vulnerable and quantum-vulnerable cryptography, warning that lattice security could face serious hits from near-term AI progress.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said it is plausible that artificial intelligence could break encryption within the next two years, framing the risk as separate from, but similar to, the later threat from quantum computers.
Decrypt reports that Buterin argued the crypto industry should protect itself from cryptography vulnerable to AI, as well as cryptography vulnerable to quantum attacks, and he pointed to concerns that lattice-based cryptography could deteriorate under advances in AI-enabled math.
The comments come a day after an Ethereum Foundation researcher, Justin Drake, called for a “bunker mode” approach, including moving funds to addresses whose public keys have not been exposed.
Buterin said it is now reasonable to believe encryption could fail before quantum computers reach the strength needed for what the industry refers to as “Q-Day,” and he noted that some projects, including Cardano, have considered lattice-based cryptography to pursue quantum resistance.
