Apple shares slide on uncertainty around 20th anniversary all-glass iPhone
Reuters and Bloomberg cited supply-chain checks that say an all-glass 20th anniversary model was scrapped due to production yield, while Apple said the plan evolved rather than was canceled outright.
Apple shares fell in New York after reports raised questions about whether Apple had dropped a glass-focused iPhone concept for the device’s 20th anniversary, Reuters reported. Apple denied that it was scrapping the idea, saying it was instead reassessing an extremely aspirational version that used too much glass and had issues connecting glass panels for large-volume production.
The uproar followed an analyst note that linked the iPhone plan to Apple’s ability to support higher average selling prices over time. Jefferies analyst Edison Lee downgraded Apple shares, arguing that the difficulty in introducing new iPhone form factors could make it harder for the company to sell higher-priced smartphones.
According to the supply-chain checks referenced by the report, the 20th anniversary all-glass iPhone model was canceled due to poor production yield. Apple sources said the company expects to launch iPhone Pro models next year with a new glassy look, using a design that places glass on both the front and back, with a metal band in the middle.
Apple is also preparing for iPhone updates next month, including what is expected to be the biggest single look change in the product’s history, a foldable version. The company is additionally slated to unveil iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models with camera improvements.
