Brookhaven seeks Chinese superconducting magnet tech for particle accelerator
Chinese official media said Brookhaven previously relied on a US supply it had “monopolised,” while Chinese researchers cited 13 years of development to reduce dependence on outside technology.
China’s state-linked media said the US Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory is seeking to buy Chinese superconducting magnet technology used in a leading particle accelerator.
The outlet said Brookhaven previously “monopolised” this specialized technology, and that the lab is looking to reduce reliance as Chinese firms compete head-to-head in cutting-edge basic science.
According to Science and Technology Daily, Yu Chenghui, chief operator of the collider, said China has proven it can compete with the world’s best, while Zhu Yingshun, a researcher at the institute, said Chinese teams spent 13 years developing a world-leading combined superconducting magnet.
