China confirms death of paratrooper in Qinghai training accident
Beijing said the 23-year-old paratrooper died after falling during a May 27 exercise in Golmud, and his ashes were returned to his hometown for burial on Aug. 11.
China has confirmed that a 23-year-old paratrooper died in a training accident during a scheduled exercise in northwestern China, following earlier disclosures of multiple military mishaps. According to SCMP Economy, state media identified the servicemember as Xia Shiyuan, from Huaiyuan county in Anhui province. Xinhua said Xia left an airborne aircraft during the morning of May 27 in Golmud, Qinghai province, fell to the ground, and was taken to hospital, where he died at 12.32pm.
The outlet also reported that Xia’s ashes were returned to his hometown on Aug. 8, with a burial held on Aug. 11 at Huaiyuan Martyrs’ Cemetery, where local authorities received him with full honours.
SCMP Economy added that Xia’s death was one of two parachute-related incidents on consecutive days that had recently been made public by the PLA.
