Coinbase, Blockstream and Strategy back push for vetted AI cybersecurity access

The campaign, led by the Bitcoin Policy Institute, seeks eligibility rules that preserve access for smaller nonprofits and independent maintainers even as vetting can still lead to blocks.

Coinbase, Blockstream and Strategy are backing an initiative aimed at expanding access to frontier AI cybersecurity models for qualified crypto defenders, according to CryptoSlate. The effort was announced Aug. 10 and has support from more than 40 organizations across the digital-asset and open-source ecosystem.

The Bitcoin Policy Institute-led campaign asks leading AI labs to offer early access where appropriate, enough compute for sustained security reviews, and protected environments for private or embargoed code. It also argues that eligibility rules should not effectively exclude smaller nonprofits and independent maintainers.

The initiative is framed around a growing risk of AI-linked attacks on crypto infrastructure, with CryptoSlate citing claims from Capriole Investments founder Charles Edwards that cyberattacks doubled since ChatGPT's release and rose another 20% since September. It also points to cases where approved researchers still face restrictions, including an example from Anchor Watch CEO Rob Hamilton that OpenAI blocked him from continuing security research on a codebase despite completing KYC and onboarding.

CryptoSlate also notes that on Aug. 10, OpenAI expanded its Daybreak cybersecurity initiative, splitting access into Daybreak Blue and Daybreak Red and introducing GPT-5.6-Cyber, a model designed for advanced cybersecurity work that would normally trigger stronger safeguards. OpenAI acknowledged that production protections can block legitimate defensive requests and said the new model responds to feedback from security researchers who reported persistent refusal.
