Disinformation online contributed to migrant surge in Ceuta, NYT says

The report links online disinformation to a spike in migrants attempting the Ceuta to reach Europe route, with about 90 deaths.

The New York Times Business reports that a wave of online disinformation helped drive a refugee crisis between Spain and Morocco.

According to the outlet, migrants in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta sought to reach Europe in large numbers, after misinformation circulated online.

The surge was associated with about 90 deaths, the report said.
