Hong Kong opens a trade office in Malaysia to deepen regional ties

Hong Kong’s commerce secretary said the Kuala Lumpur office is meant to strengthen the city’s presence as Asean remains its second-largest merchandise trading partner.

Hong Kong has opened a new Economic and Trade Office in Kuala Lumpur, aiming to deepen commercial ties in Southeast Asia and position the city as a bridge between Malaysia and China’s Greater Bay Area.

South China Morning Post reports that Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau Ying-wah called the Kuala Lumpur move highly strategic and said the office would strengthen Hong Kong’s regional presence.

Yau said the Asean bloc continues to rank as Hong Kong’s second-largest merchandise trading partner, listing members including the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and others.
