Illinois Realtors launches Housing Supply Accelerator Program

The initiative pairs the association’s government affairs directors with mayors and county leaders to review zoning and development rules, with each community setting actions, timelines, and metrics.

Illinois Realtors launched the Illinois Housing Supply Accelerator Program, pairing its government affairs directors with local officials to speed up housing production across the state, the group announced. Under the program, communities will review zoning ordinances, development regulations, and other local requirements that can slow or prevent new construction. Each participating community will set its own priorities and pursue solutions tailored to its housing market, including defined actions, timelines, and metrics to track progress.

Illinois Realtors said the effort responds to growing housing affordability pressure in Illinois, where supply constraints have affected household formation and in-migration to job centers. It cited knock-on impacts including higher prices and rents, and worsening affordability challenges for residents.

Jeff Baker, CEO of Illinois Realtors, said communities need tools they can use now to identify barriers to housing and take steps to remove them. The association said it will work alongside communities to design solutions that can be implemented quickly, in some cases almost immediately, including potential changes to approvals, zoning, fees, and other requirements that may deter building.
