France bans unsolicited telemarketing calls starting Tuesday

France has banned unsolicited telemarketing phone calls starting Tuesday, prohibiting businesses across all sectors from placing cold calls.
Calls will be allowed only when they relate to a contract a person has already entered into or when the company has obtained prior consent to contact the person for marketing, according to BBC Business.
Consumer advocacy group Que Choisir Ensemble praised the change, saying unwanted solicitations should stop, and called it a “small revolution” for the sales industry.
Business groups have criticized the reforms, including concerns raised by Morocco officials about potential job losses tied to French demand for call center services, and France’s direct-selling trade association warning the rules will add administrative burden.
