Luke Dashjr removed from Bitcoin BIP editor role after BIP-110 stall

Dashjr’s removal follows accusations of bypassing due process in BIP-110 related edits, and the proposal drew only about 2.6% miner support versus a 55% threshold.

CoinDesk reports that Luke Dashjr has been removed from his role as an editor for Bitcoin BIP proposals, a position tied to development of the Bitcoin network. The change comes amid controversy around BIP-110, an effort associated with restricting non-financial data use of the main chain.

According to CoinDesk, Dashjr was accused of abusing editorial authority, including assigning a BIP number before a proposal was discussed and merging updates into the repository without following due process. A motion calling for his removal referenced that Dashjr made few day-to-day contributions as a BIP editor since additional editors began serving in April 2024, and that the merge action cited was his first since May 2024.

CoinDesk also reports that Dashjr said he is taking a sabbatical from his roles as chair and chief technology officer of mining pool Ocean. The outlet notes BIP-110 stalled after entering a miners and node operators signaling period and never gained momentum, garnering support from about 2.6% of miners, well below the 55% threshold required to succeed.
