Malaysia PM Anwar accuses opposition of ‘political drama’ over Tabung Haji row

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim accused opposition lawmakers of staging “political drama” after they walked out of a special parliamentary session tied to a long-awaited royal inquiry into Tabung Haji, the Muslim pilgrimage savings fund, according to SCMP Economy.

SCMP Economy reported that Tabung Haji’s governance, accounting practices, and investment losses are especially sensitive in Malaysia because the haj to Mecca has deep religious and political significance, and Anwar had previously raised the inquiry during campaigning as part of efforts to confront corruption and financial mismanagement.

SCMP Economy also said Anwar did not attend the Tuesday sitting because he was recovering from elective laparoscopic surgery for a para-umbilical hernia.

In his remarks, Anwar questioned whether lawmakers wanted to debate him or the inquiry into Tabung Haji, and framed the walkout as an issue of “betrayal” related to the fund.
