Meta to fully unwind Manus AI deal after Beijing national security block

Manus said affected users must back up data by August 23, while it will delete data generated by certain users on or after December 29, when Meta acquired the startup.

Meta Platforms is set to fully unwind its acquisition of Chinese-founded AI agent platform Manus, after Beijing blocked the deal on national security grounds more than three months ago, according to a report by SCMP Economy.

In a user note, Manus said it will delete data generated by certain users on or after December 29, the date Meta acquired the startup, as part of its transition back to independent operations.

The company asked affected users to back up their data from now until August 23, while users it said were unaffected may continue using the service without disruption.

Manus, launched in March 2025, describes itself as an AI agent platform that autonomously executes tasks for users, such as browsing the internet and writing reports, and said the data deletion is needed to comply with regulatory requirements in specific parts of the world.
