North Korea fires suspected ballistic missile toward sea, Japan says

Japan said the suspected missile landed outside its exclusive economic zone, with the launch occurring around 6am local time from the Wonsan area.

North Korea fired a suspected ballistic missile toward the sea on Wednesday, Japan’s Defence Ministry said, calling it the second such launch in less than a week, according to SCMP Economy.

The outlet said the suspected missile appeared to have landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone in the water. Yonhap, citing South Korea’s military, reported that North Korea launched an unidentified projectile off the country’s east coast.

SCMP Economy also reported that South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the launch came from the Wonsan area at around 6am local time.

The launch follows plans for major joint South Korean and U.S. military drills from August 17 to 27 aimed at countering North Korea’s evolving nuclear and weapons capabilities, SCMP Economy added. It noted that Pyongyang has previously denounced the annual drills as a provocation.
