North Korea fires ballistic missile ahead of US-South Korea drills

The missile flew more than 700 km and Seoul and Washington said they are analyzing its specifications ahead of the 11-day exercises.

North Korea fired a ballistic missile off its east coast toward Japan early on Wednesday, according to Seoul’s military, with the launch coming days before planned US and South Korea joint drills.

Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected the missile around 6:00 am local time launched from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan.

The missile reportedly flew more than 700 km over the water, and Seoul said South Korea and the United States are analyzing the missile’s specifications.

The exercises are due to begin on Monday and are scheduled to run for 11 days, a regular summer fixture aimed at strengthening US and South Korea defense posture against North Korea’s nuclear threat, the report said, adding that Pyongyang characterizes such drills as rehearsals for invasion.
