World Grain reports on new research from Iowa State University’s Kent Feed Mill and Grain Science Complex that challenges the usual assumption that feed grinding performance is mostly determined by screen size and feed rate.

According to the outlet, grinding aims to reach a target particle size while maintaining acceptable throughput and minimizing energy use. The article says many mills adjust production primarily by changing screens, while motor rotational speed is often kept fixed, which can increase downtime when screen changes are required.

World Grain adds that hammer milling intensity depends on hammer tip speed, which is tied to motor speed and the hammer mill diameter and screen size. It notes many hammer mills ramp to 100% operational speed and then run at that level, meaning tip speed is treated as a design parameter rather than a variable operators strategically control.

The research emphasizes the need for more systematic evaluation of hammer tip speed under steady-state conditions, using it in combination with different screen sizes to achieve desired particle size outcomes while balancing throughput and energy consumption, World Grain reports.
