Russia releases jailed US marine on Putin humanitarian pardon

Russia freed former US marine Robert Gilman, 32, who had been jailed in the country since 2022, after Vladimir Putin approved a humanitarian pardon, according to US officials cited by SCMP Economy.

SCMP Economy reports that the White House and the US State Department had urged Moscow to release Gilman so he could receive medical treatment in the United States.

Gilman had been held in a prison in Voronezh, about 340 miles south of Moscow, and the outlet said the exact details of his health were unclear. It also noted that Gilman was moved in late June from the prison hospital to a psychiatric ward and was assessed in a catatonic-like state.

On Tuesday, SCMP Economy reports that Gilman was traveling on a State Department plane from Russia to Washington Dulles Airport.
