SEC to vote on proposed crypto fundraising rules on Aug. 14
The SEC open meeting is set for 10 a.m. ET on Aug. 14, with the proposal expected to go to public comment if approved.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission will vote Friday on whether to authorize proposed rules that would create a tailored pathway for some token projects to raise capital without completing full securities registration. CryptoSlate reports the proposal would be released after the vote for public comment.
If the SEC approves the framework, it would not function as an immediate exemption issuers can use right away. The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. ET on Aug. 14, and the concepts would be built from ideas SEC Chair Paul Atkins discussed in March, though Atkins presented them as personal views and used example figures rather than finalized limits.
CryptoSlate says the proposal includes two fundraising rules and a separate concept tied to an asset’s status after an issuer finishes or permanently ceases the essential managerial efforts it promised to buyers. One startup exemption could last up to four years and uses an illustrative $5 million cap over that period, while a separate fundraising exemption uses an illustrative $75 million in any 12-month period.
The outlet also notes that the proposal’s eligibility and resale details are not yet clear to token developers, including how bad actor exclusions, investor-level limits, and resale would work, and whether Atkins’s example figures survive staff drafting. The SEC proposal also would not eliminate any earlier registration obligation from an original token offering, even if an asset later exits securities status after issuer efforts end.
