UN says 2.4 million Afghan girls barred from secondary education

UNESCO said the number denied secondary schooling has climbed by 200,000 since last year, and could approach four million by 2030 if the ban continues.

The United Nations said about 2.4 million Afghan girls have been denied access to secondary education since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, calling for an end to what it described as discriminatory restrictions.

Agence France-Presse reported that UN officials said girls cannot study beyond primary school under the Taliban’s policy, which the authorities justify using their interpretation of Islamic law.

The UN’s education and heritage body UNESCO said the number of girls affected rose by 200,000 since last year, and could reach nearly four million by 2030 if the ban persists.

The Taliban administration has imposed broad limits on women’s activities, including bans on education beyond primary school, and earlier moves that barred girls from secondary schools in March 2022 and closed universities to young women later that year.
