US and China dominate AI innovation rankings as Europe lags
A Global AI Innovation Index covering 46 countries gave the US 78.4 points and China 60.5, while the top European economies were far behind, according to the data.
The US and China are extending their lead in artificial intelligence innovation, while Europe struggles to establish a distinct third pole, according to new rankings cited by SCMP Economy.
In a 2026 Global AI Innovation Index covering 46 countries, the US led with 78.4 points, followed by China at 60.5. The index placed Britain third with 40.0 points, with Germany and France later in the rankings at sixth and seventh respectively.
The outlet also cited Stanford’s 2026 AI Index Report, which found the US produced 59 notable AI models last year, compared with 35 from China and two from Europe.
