Boltz founders step down as a bitcoin group takes over disabled swap service
Boltz suspended swaps on Aug. 3 after AI-assisted attackers targeted the platform, and the company says user funds were never at risk because the service is non-custodial.
Boltz said its original founders have stepped down from the suspended Bitcoin swap service and an unnamed group of “veteran Bitcoiners” has agreed to take over operations. The incoming team will supply capital and engineering resources while Boltz works to identify and fix vulnerabilities, with the goal of restoring swaps as soon as possible.
Boltz said the original founders left the company effective immediately and will have no formal or authoritative role, adding that any future involvement in its open-source software would be voluntary. As of Wednesday, Boltz’s web app still displayed “Swap Services Disabled,” and new swaps were unavailable at the reporting cutoff.
In explaining the shutdown, The Defiant reports that Boltz suspended the service on Aug. 3 after AI-assisted attackers increasingly targeted it over several months. Boltz said several attacks succeeded and caused losses to the company, but user funds were never at risk because the swap service is non-custodial.
Boltz also said its API remained available for cooperative refunds and that unilateral refunds did not depend on Boltz infrastructure. The company stated its support team remained reachable, and its documentation describes a REST API used to query supported pairs, create and monitor swaps, including swaps involving Lightning, bitcoin and Liquid bitcoin.
