China approves Japan acting consul general in Chongqing, ending vacancy

The Chongqing post had been empty since December 5, after the previous head of mission was reassigned to Shenyang.

China has approved a new Japanese acting consul general in Chongqing, ending an eight-month vacancy at the Japanese mission in the southwestern municipality following a bilateral freeze, the South China Morning Post reports, citing Japanese news agency Kyodo.

According to the report, Shigehiro Nishiumi, previously Japan’s deputy consul general in Hong Kong, assumed the Chongqing post on August 4. The SCMP notes that the Chongqing position had remained unfilled since December 5, when former head of mission Mari Takada was transferred to lead the consulate in Shenyang.

Japanese media had said earlier in the year that Chinese authorities delayed approval of Tokyo’s request for Takada’s successor, and when asked about the vacancy in January, China’s foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Beijing was handling the matter “in accordance with procedures.”

The Japanese consulate website had not yet published details about Nishiumi’s appointment at the time of publication, and SCMP said it contacted Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for comment.
