Erdogan urges more countries to join Turkey, Saudi, Pakistan pact

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he wants additional countries to join a defence agreement signed last week between Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, describing it as a regional umbrella that could expand beyond the three states.
Erdogan made the comments as the Middle East grapples with fallout from the US-Iran war, which has pulled in regional players and disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, according to SCMP Economy.
The agreement, known as the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, includes a Nato-style provision stating that any attack on one country would be treated as an attack on all members, the outlet said.
Egypt has not commented on either the pact or Erdogan-linked remarks ahead of a planned visit by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to Cairo, and while Cairo has robust military cooperation with Ankara, it has given no indication it plans to sign up, SCMP Economy added.
