Greenland orders delay for Greenland Energy Arctic drilling

The postponement pushes any possible start to the winter of 2027 and adds uncertainty over plans for wells in a protected wetland.

Greenland authorities have forced Texas-based Greenland Energy to postpone drilling in the Arctic Jameson Land region, after the company brought drilling equipment ashore in July without permission, defying claims from a US envoy that American extraction could begin next year, according to the Guardian Business.

During talks, Greenlandic officials said the timetable was too tight to assess the environmental and social impact, the outlet reported, and regulators will have to decide whether to sanction drilling in a protected wetland that is home to rare birds and muskoxen relied on by local hunters.

Greenland Energy and the government said that, at the earliest, drilling could now commence in the winter of 2027, the report added.

The delay also affected market expectations for the company’s shares, with the outlet saying the price fell by more than a third after the drilling postponement was announced.
