Harmony issues emergency patch to stop unauthorized ONE minting
Harmony told validators to install v2026.1.1 on Aug. 12 and paused bridge.harmony.one while it reviews whether any rollback is needed.
Harmony has released an emergency validator patch aimed at stopping further unauthorized minting of ONE, the layer-1 blockchain network’s native token. The network said it will address tokens already created in a later update, while leaving the number and ultimate treatment unresolved.
In its notice, Harmony confirmed that unauthorized minting occurred but did not disclose the amount. Onchain researcher Juiceberg estimated around 4 billion ONE, about 26% of the supply figure cited in the incident post, had been minted without authorization, and that about 2.8 billion ONE had reached exchanges, though Harmony has not independently verified those figures.
The patch includes code changes to two cross-shard receipt weaknesses, which can carry transaction results between parts of the network. Harmony said one flaw could let receipts pass quorum checks without proper approvals, and a second flaw could allow previously processed receipts to appear new, enabling the destination to be credited again without the matching debit.
Harmony also paused bridge.harmony.one during the response and published four implicated wallet addresses, asking exchanges to block and freeze traceable funds, without naming the venues or disclosing how much was frozen. The project said a rollback option was being considered earlier, but it has not announced whether a rollback will happen or what point in time transactions could be reversed.
