Illinois storm surge raises stakes for commercial property insurance costs
Preliminary National Weather Service data show 233 tornadoes in Illinois in 2026 so far, about 2.5 times the total in Indiana, increasing claim risk that can drive higher premiums.
Severe storms in Illinois throughout 2026 are beginning to translate into potential cost pressure for commercial property owners, according to Bisnow.
The latest system brought emergency alerts across the Chicago area, damaged the roof of the Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre in Tinley Park, and caused additional impacts including power cuts and damage to a roof at an animal daycare in Orland Park.
A key driver is that the state is topping the National Weather Service count for severe storm reports, with preliminary 2026 data showing 233 tornadoes in Illinois so far, roughly 2.5 times more than Indiana.
Bisnow also points to the broader financial backdrop, citing NOAA data that Illinois incurred $4.6 billion in costs from billion-dollar weather and climate disasters in 2023 and $4.0 billion in 2024, both well above the state's $1.3 billion historical average, while local property and casualty insurers wrote $1.8 billion in commercial property premiums in 2024.
