Indonesia’s dynastic rivalry shifts to Solo-area parliamentary contest in 2029

South China Morning Post reports that a rivalry between two Indonesia political dynasties is moving toward the parliamentary arena, with Joko Widodo’s youngest son, Kaesang Pangarep, preparing to run for a seat in Central Java V in 2029.

Kaesang, who chairs the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), announced the plan at a party meeting in Solo on July 25. The constituency has been represented since 2009 by House Speaker Puan Maharani, a prominent figure in Megawati Sukarnoputri’s Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).

Central Java V covers Solo, Boyolali, Klaten, and Sukoharjo, combining Widodo’s home base with a long-standing PDI-P stronghold, setting up a proxy contest between the two families.

Analysts cited by SCMP frame the move as part of Widodo’s broader effort to extend PSI and his family’s political rise beyond a personal alliance, with the proportional electoral system potentially allowing both Kaesang and Puan to secure seats.
