Micron surge tied to prior disclosures on HBM supply and capacity constraints

Micron said in December 2024 that producing HBM3E requires about three wafer starts versus conventional DRAM, and its HBM output for calendar 2025 was already sold out, setting up the later price repricing.

Micron Technology shares have surged as investors focused on a memory shortage that the company had already telegraphed through its own supply disclosures, according to Yahoo Finance.

The outlet points to Micron's statements that HBM3E production uses significantly more wafer capacity than conventional DRAM, with management saying that making a given quantity of bits as HBM takes about three wafer starts where conventional DRAM needs one, while noting that HBM was already pressuring non-HBM supply.

By March 2025, Micron's guidance further reflected constrained supply, with the company forecasting that its 2025 supply growth would run below industry demand growth for both DRAM and NAND, and saying its calendar 2025 HBM output was sold out.

In results, Micron reported fiscal Q3 2026 revenue of $41.5 billion, up 346% year over year, and guided fiscal Q4 2026 to a record $50 billion, give or take $1 billion, alongside 16 strategic customer agreements and $22 billion in customer cash deposits and related financial commitments projected under them, as Yahoo Finance describes.
