NYPD probes gold courier scam that has taken over $100 million

The New York Police Department is investigating a so-called gold bar courier scam that authorities say has collectively stolen more than $100 million from retirees, according to Yahoo Finance citing ABC News.
The probe, which began in May 2024, involves the NYPD, the Department of Homeland Security, the IRS, and law enforcement agencies in other states because investigators say the scheme is not limited to New York.
According to the report, the scam often starts with a computer pop-up warning victims that their device or financial accounts have been compromised, prompting them to call a provided number and speak with people posing as tech support.
Authorities say scammers may persuade victims to grant remote access, potentially allowing criminals to view files and accounts and gain access to devices such as webcams, printers, audio, and computers, then pressure victims to move savings out of bank accounts and convert funds into cash or precious metals for alleged protection.
The FBI has also warned about similar schemes, and its 2024 Internet Crime Complaint Center report recorded 525 complaints involving gold and precious metals courier scams, with reported losses totaling $219 million nationwide, according to the article.
