Routing fault nearly pushed Solana past its finality threshold

About 28.8% of staked SOL became delinquent early Wednesday after a misconfigured route at hosting provider Teraswitch, putting finality at 33.3% and the network just 4.5 percentage points from halting transaction finalization.

Almost 29% of staked SOL went delinquent early Wednesday, after a routing fault at hosting provider Teraswitch threatened to take Solana past its finality threshold, according to Decrypt. Solana stops finalizing blocks at 33.34%, and the network got to roughly 86% of the way there after 28.83% of staked SOL was knocked offline. About 90 validators were affected, losing a combined 333 SOL in rewards. Decrypt reports that a single autonomous system, AS20326, concentrated the impact, carrying about 27% of staked SOL and exceeding the Solana Foundation delegation program’s 25% cap. Around 94% of AS20326 went dark at once, including most of the network stake routed through affected sites, while North America was untouched.

Engineers identified the fault within 10 minutes and service returned at 04:16:15 UTC, Decrypt said. The outage tied back to how Teraswitch propagated a default route after stripping route attributes, which led edge routers in Europe and parts of Asia-Pacific to prefer the wrong locally originated path until reconvergence.
