Solana finality risk rises as 28.83% of staked SOL goes delinquent

Staking protocol Marinade said a Teraswitch routing fault pushed 94% of 118.89 million SOL on its autonomous system offline, affecting 90 validators and costing 333 SOL in rewards.

Solana came within about 4.5 percentage points of losing transaction finality in an early Wednesday incident, after 28.83% of staked SOL went delinquent, according to staking protocol Marinade Finance, as described by The Defiant.

Marinade said the episode affected 90 validators and resulted in a combined 333 SOL in rewards being missed. It also said the delinquency stayed below the 33.34% threshold Marinade had indicated would stop finality, and noted that Solana had no incident listed on its public status page for Aug. 12.

The disruption was tied to a Teraswitch routing failure, with Marinade reporting that AS20326 carried 118.89 million SOL, more than one-quarter of all staked SOL, and that 94% of it went dark at once. Marinade added that 14.1 million SOL on other operators went down in the same minutes, but it could not determine whether the events shared a dependency or were coincidental.

Teraswitch confirmed that customers at multiple data center sites lost reachability to internet destinations, and said a default route linked to its Miami site was propagated with metric and routing communities stripped. The provider said a malformed route entered Europe and Asia-Pacific via an AMS2 route reflector, downstream routers rejected it, engineers identified the issue within 10 minutes, and service was restored at 4:16:15 a.m. UTC. Marinade said 59 validators holding 80.2 million SOL returned in the same narrow window, and that no validator failover was needed.
