U.S. budget deficit jumps in July to highest since March 2021
The deficit over the first 10 months of the fiscal year totaled nearly $1.8 trillion, exceeding the same period in 2025.
U.S. budget deficits widened sharply in July, reaching the highest monthly level since March 2021, according to CNBC Markets.
CNBC reports the size of the year to date shortfall also rose meaningfully, with the cumulative deficit across the first 10 months of the fiscal year totaling nearly $1.8 trillion.
The outlet said the combined red ink over that 10 month stretch surpassed the deficit recorded during the same period in 2025, indicating a deterioration versus last year’s pace.
