UK reveals first locations eligible for £250 pylon bill discount
The discount is available for households within 1,600 feet of 43 transmission projects for up to 10 years, funded by adding about 80p per year to all energy bills.
BBC Business reports the UK has identified the first areas where households living within 1,600 feet of upgraded electricity pylons and substations can receive a £250-a-year discount on their electricity bills.
The bill discount scheme covers customers near 43 transmission projects across Britain for up to 10 years, with eligibility applying to about two-thirds of projects in Scotland to support the fast-growing wind sector, and additional upgrades planned north of London, in East Anglia, the Midlands, and North Wales.
According to the report, the government says replacing and upgrading decades-old grid infrastructure is necessary to distribute renewable power and improve energy security, noting that grid capacity limits can lead to some wind farms being paid to switch off.
The scheme is funded by an estimated 80p per year added to all energy bills, with most eligible customers expected to receive discounts automatically every six months, and first payments due to begin early next year after suppliers and Ofgem provide information.
