US charges 11 in alleged sham marriage network tied to green cards
Prosecutors allege the scheme arranged more than 1,000 sham marriages over about a decade, with at least six service members traveling to New York City for weddings.
SCMP Economy reports that US prosecutors have charged 11 people over an alleged decade-long network that arranged more than 1,000 sham marriages, largely involving Chinese nationals seeking green cards.
The indictment, unsealed in federal court in New York, alleges that at least 14 active-duty American soldiers were paired with Chinese citizens, with about 11 of the soldiers stationed at a US Army base in Kentucky.
Prosecutors said some service members traveled to New York City to take part in sham weddings, while an alleged facilitator and recruiter traveled from New York to Kentucky and Tennessee to arrange two others.
SCMP Economy added that the US Army Criminal Investigation Division is among the agencies investigating the case.
