US tightens federally funded research links with China

The United States is moving to close off a key remaining area of US-China engagement by tightening restrictions on federally funded scientific research involving Chinese institutions, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet says the latest measures are arriving as Washington and Beijing prepare for summit talks intended to manage an increasingly adversarial relationship, and that they follow a years-long shift away from cooperation as funding restrictions, blacklists, and security rules expand.
SCMP Economy also notes that while the US-China Science and Technology Agreement signed in 1979 was renewed in late 2024, the practical scope for collaboration has been shrinking as the restrictions tighten.
For decades, science cooperation has been treated as one of the few long-standing areas of common interest, and the report characterizes the new step as among the most consequential moves in that erosion.
