WHO warns Trump child vaccination overhaul contradicts evidence
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said vaccines, including MMR, are safe and that recent US immunization changes are not aligned with evidence on when children are most vulnerable to disease.
The World Health Organization warned that President Donald Trump’s push to overhaul child vaccination policy in the United States conflicts with decades of evidence, according to SCMP Economy citing comments from WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
WHO said Trump signed an order on Monday calling for a rethink of school vaccine mandates and reiterating calls to separate the measles, mumps, and rubella, or MMR, vaccine into three separate shots.
Ghebreyesus said the science is “unequivocal” that vaccines, including MMR, are safe and do not cause autism, adding that vaccination policy should be based on rigorous, independent and transparent review rather than political influence.
He also said the WHO is concerned that recent changes to US immunization policy do not align with evidence on the timing of children’s highest vulnerability to disease.
