Bitcoin firms urge AI labs to share powerful security tools
The letter says current safety filters limit access for Bitcoin Core maintainers, while attackers reportedly get months of head start through trusted programs and other channels.
More than three dozen bitcoin and crypto firms have urged major AI labs to provide open source security researchers early access to their most capable models, arguing that defenders are constrained by safety measures while attackers face fewer limits, according to CoinDesk.
The group, organized by the Bitcoin Policy Institute and signed by companies including Coinbase, Block and BitGo, says Bitcoin Core developers are locked out of trusted partner programs and are hampered by safety filters on public models. It argues those constraints can block legitimate efforts to find weaknesses before criminals do.
Citing recent exploits against BTCPay Server and Lightning nodes, the firms point to work by an AI powered volunteer “Bitcoin Red Team” to support their request for early model access, compute resources, secure testing environments, and direct channels to lab security teams.
The signatories also say offensive capabilities can be visible to a small set of labs and partners months before broader access, while public models, stolen access to corporate systems, and purpose built hacking tools can still spread those capabilities to the wider ecosystem. The letter asks for early access before public release, sufficient computing budgets to run meaningful reviews, and secure environments for testing.
