Bitcoin industry turns to Chinese AI models for defensive cybersecurity

Bitcoin self-custody and exchange leaders say US frontier AI restrictions blocked key red teaming efforts on Bitcoin infrastructure.

Bitcoin industry leaders and open source developers are publicly warning that Chinese AI models are currently outperforming restricted American frontier systems for defensive cybersecurity work tied to securing critical Bitcoin infrastructure, according to Bitcoin Magazine.

Rob Hamilton, CEO of AnchorWatch, a Bitcoin self custody insurance company, said US AI restrictions limited his ability to continue analysis after he integrated OpenAI’s trusted cyber program, including work on a codebase he said he had already disclosed responsibly. Hamilton added that he plans to use Chinese open source models to continue research to protect Bitcoin infrastructure.

Francis Pouliot, founder of Bull Bitcoin, described the situation as severely limiting for Bitcoin related security reviews, saying he asked American models to review a patch but they refused. In a follow up, Pouliot said a Chinese open source model identified a money stealing exploit in a project he was auditing, demonstrated it on regtest, and helped patch it.

PortlandHODL, a Bitcoin Core contributor who builds for AnchorWatch, also highlighted what he described as a performance gap between US based frontier AI models and Chinese models, pointing to faster and more effective responses for Bitcoin focused defensive tasks.
